SKY film deal with NBCUniversal

SKY has signed a long-term deal with NBCUniversal International Distribution which will allow for some of the world’s hottest movies to screen exclusively in New Zealand on SKY’s broadcast platforms, as well as available to stream on NZ SVOD service, NEON.

Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment’s Jurassic World, Ted 2, Illumination Entertainment’s Minions, Pitch Perfect 2, Trainwreck, Ex Machina and the award-winning Steve Jobs are just some of the great new NBCUniversal titles that SKY Movies customers and subscribers to NEON will be able to enjoy exclusively in coming months. The hotly-anticipated upcoming Bourne film starring Matt Damon, and Fifty Shades Darker will also be available exclusively to SKY.

“We are delighted to have renewed our deal with one of our longest standing movie partners, particularly coming off the back of a year that has seen Universal Pictures notch up the highest grossing worldwide box office year in cinematic history,” said Lisa Clements, SKY’s Head of Acquisitions, Entertainment & Movies.

“Not only will our SKY Movies customers be able to access these great titles and more across our platforms, but our NEON subscribers will also get exclusive access to the newest hits and a premium selection of recent library titles from Universal Pictures such as Jurassic World and Fast & Furious 7 in this market,” she said.  This new SVOD agreement means NEON will have exclusive NZ SVOD rights to all new NBCUniversal titles simultaneously with SKY Movies.

SKY’s Director of Entertainment Content, Travis Dunbar, says the extension of SKY’s long-term relationship with NBCUniversal adds enormous value to SKY’s movie customers who are already enjoying access to great films such as the Fast & Furious franchise and Fifty Shades of Grey.

“For more than 100 years, Universal Pictures has been at the cutting edge of their industry, continually enjoying major successes with a diverse range of titles; from all-audience event films from Illumination Entertainment such as Despicable Me to unforgettable drama, and action films like those in the Bourne franchise.  They’ve released multiple Oscar® winning films, movies that make you think, movies that you can escape in, not to mention some of the most anticipated soon-to-be-released films on the planet. The portfolio from this iconic studio literally offers something for everyone,” he said.

“We are pleased to extend our partnership with SKY, which ensures that our outstanding portfolio of feature films will continue to find their home in New Zealand on SKY’s broadcast platforms, in addition to streaming on NEON, for many years to come,” said Belinda Menendez, President, NBCUniversal International Distribution & Networks.
