Sky: has all the sport so takes awards as well

SKY Television and the Halberg Trust confirmed late last week that agreement had been reached to broadcast the 2009 Westpac Halberg Awards LIVE on SKY Sport.

The 2009 awards dinner will be held on Thursday 4 February 2010 at the Sky City Convention Centre in Auckland. The event will also include the Academy Awards style “Red Carpet” segment which first became part of the event in 2007.

John Fellet, SKY Chief Executive, said, “We are honoured to have the opportunity to broadcast the 2009 Westpac Halberg Awards, New Zealand’s premier sporting showcase. This prestigious event is a celebration of New Zealand sport.”

Mike Jeffcoat, Halberg Trust Chairman, didn’t say, “TVNZ’s broke. Where else were we going to go?”

He did say, “The Westpac Halbergs in February also double to include our ‘decade award’ where we honour the achievements of some of our sporting greats (2000-2009) and choose a ‘Decade Winner’.

“Of course we will ensure we also get our core message out to New Zealand – get young people with disabilities more active more often in sport and leisure of their choice – but this night is very much about our twin aim – honouring sporting excellence – where we recognize the sports stars that have excited us all during 2009 in an evening of celebration.”

Whether the ‘twin aim’ comment is a Freudian slip about who’ll be the ‘Decade Winner’ remains to be seen, but the recently-retired rowers have got to be strong contenders.

SKY will broadcast a replay of the awards dinner on free-to-air channel PRIME and will also broadcast two studio based pre-awards shows, showcasing previous award winners together with prospective awards recipients.
