Sony and Grass Valley collaborate to drive common IP standards in the industry

Sony, Sydney, 18 April 2016 – At NAB 2016, Sony will announce its collaboration with Grass Valley, a Belden Brand, to develop industry-wide interoperability between the companies’ IP-based solutions and devices.

In order to foster better interoperability across the industry and ensure a pathway for customers to a standards-based approach, Grass Valley plans to implement an IP-to-IP gateway card compatible with its innovative GV-Node IP processing platform. This card will ensure compatibility between Sony’s Networked Media Interface (NMI) and Low Latency Video Codec (LLVC) technologies and systems based on standards supported by the Alliance for IP Media Solutions (AIMS) roadmap.

“With multiple IP formats being considered by broadcasters, ensuring interoperability is critical for IP solutions to become viable and deployable,” said Hiroshi Kiriyama, Senior General Manager, Media Segment Solution Business Unit, Sony Corporation. “We are proud to collaborate with Grass Valley and help lead the industry towards IP.”

Another result of this collaboration is Sony’s participation in the AIMS initiative. This promotes the adoption of widely supported and open standards to foster IP-based interoperability and further industry migration to IP-based platforms.

Grass Valley is a founding member of the AIMS initiative that was launched recently to ensure interoperability for devices related to industry standards such as SMPTE ST2022-6, TR-03 and TR-04 proposed by VSF and AES67. Grass Valley also provides broadcasters with the industry’s widest portfolio of IP-enabled solutions it markets as its Glass-to-Glass IP solution.

NMI, a key technology of Sony’s IP Live Production System, packetizes, transmits and clean-switches HD and Ultra HD (4K) video, audio, and metadata in real time over standard network infrastructures.

“Sony is a technology leader in our industry. We are extremely pleased to work with them towards a standards-based approach to IP while improving interoperability between Grass Valley AIMS based systems and Sony’s NMI based systems. The industry has spoken. They want true ISO standards that will stand the test of time and ensure broad interoperability. Grass Valley is thrilled to work with Sony towards this goal,” said Michael Cronk, Senior Vice President, Strategic Marketing of Grass Valley.
