Idol winner and lead of Tearapa Kahi’s Mt Zion, last year’s highest grossing local film, Stan Walker will feature in Tammy Davis’ hip-hop film Born To Dance, which will shoot in October.
Tammy ‘Munter’ Davis will make his feature debt as a director, following success with shorts Ebony Society and Sonny, My Older Brother. The script is by former NZFC development exec and playwright Hone Kouka, who got to go through the development process on the other side of the table for Born to Dance.
Parris Goebel will choreograph. Goebel has choreographed for Jennifer Lopez’s Dance Again World Tour and Cirque du Soleil’s Las Vegas show Michael Jackson: One. She’s also appeared in Step Up All In, is a multiple award winner at world hip-hop championships in recent years and earlier this year was named Female Choreographer of the Year at the World of Dance awards.
Born to Dance has been holding dance auditions and, from today, is running a competition via radio stations Flava and ZM (no jokes about how good dance looks on the radio, please). The winner will score a shimmy-on part in the film, the producers will score plenty of awareness for the project.
Shaking their tail feathers behind the scenes will be Leanne Saunders (The Weight of Elephants, The Devil’s Rock, The Devil Dared Me To), Daniel Story (VFX whizz and EP on Housebound) and Vendetta’s Jill Macnab – all as producers. Vendetta’s Phil Bremner and Curious’ Matt Noonan will EP. Curious Film is a production partner, Park Road is the film’s post-production partner, and Vendetta Films will distribute.
