STUDIOCANAL launches Cultivator fund

STUDIOCANAL New Zealand announces a significant injection of funding into the New Zealand film industry with the STUDIOCANAL Cultivator Fund. Established to further the growth of local stories, the fund is the first of its kind STUDIOCANAL has been able to offer New Zealand since the European studio entered the local market in 2012.

Effective immediately, the STUDIOCANAL Cultivator Fund focuses on the development and production of unique New Zealander stories which will resonate locally and transcend to international markets. The new fund fortifies STUDIOCANAL’s already significant place in the local market by bolstering the local film industry, developing local talent and creating stories for broad audiences. Its major focus is script development and the production of screen content across feature film and TV.

As one of Europe’s leading film studios, beneficiaries of the STUDIOCANAL Cultivator Fund will have a unique opportunity to broaden their audiences to a global scale and reach markets in the United Kingdom, France and Germany with product from the fund potentially feeding into the studio’s other territories, including representation by one of the world’s most prestigious international sales operations.

STUDIOCANAL Australia and New Zealand Chief Executive Officer Elizabeth Trotman says, “We are thrilled to announce this investment to start fostering the fantastic talent in Australia and New Zealand. We want to identify, cultivate and create incredible stories for local and international audiences alike. We are already developing a family film, two biopics, a prestige drama and a romantic comedy. A key focus for us is to include stories by and for women, taking important steps towards gender equality and female representation in the industry.”

Equipped with these new development funds, STUDIOCANAL General Manager – Sales and Acquisitions Nigel Forsyth has begun discussions with producers from across New Zealand. Forsyth says, “As the NZ film industry continues to grow, it is an exciting time to be working with local producers and script writers. This new development fund not only reinforces our commitment to support local content, it also allows us to further our existing relationships with the incredible filmmaking talent NZ has to offer.”

The STUDIOCANAL Cultivator Fund has a formal submission process, by invitation only. STUDIOCANAL will not accept unsolicited scripts.
