For the second time in two days, a NZ co-production title makes the cut for Sundance 2015. The festival has announced the films selected in the out-of-competition New Frontier, Park City at Midnight and Spotlight strands.
The NZ-Canada title Turbo Kid, produced from this end by Tim Riley and Ant Timpson, brings up the rear (alphabetically speaking) in the Park City at Midnight programme.
Timpson said today that he was ecstatic about the selection, especially as the film had been submitted to Sundance ungraded and without any VFX shots. Asked whether the film was yet complete, he said, “Hell, no.”
Written and directed by the RKSS Collective (Francois Simard, Anouk and Yoann-Karl Whissell) the feature was developed from a submission to the ABCs of Death ‘T is for …’ competition. The project was pitched at Fantasia International Film Festival’s Frontières International Co-Production Market two years ago with Timpson’s support.The film, funded by Telefilm Canada and the NZFC, went into production in February.
The three directors are currently here in NZ, working to complete the film while the producers work out how many of the team they can get to Sundance. On the bright side, three directors is considerably less to wrangle for a festival appearance than the 26 involved in the Toronto-premiered ABCs of Death.
Sundance runs 22 January – 1 February in Salt Lake City. Announcements for Documentary Premieres, Premieres, Shorts and Sundance Kids are still to come.
