Top of the Lake takes Logie

Jane Campion’s Otago-shot drama has taken the gong for Most Outstanding Mini-Series at the Australian awards bash in Melbourne, while Rebecca Gibney was beaten to the Most Popular Actress

award by Offspring’s Asher Keddie.

The Logie awards are something of a hybrid, being presented as Most Popular or More Outstanding. The Popular awards are vox pop, voted for by the readers of TV Week and – in recent years – by anybody willing to vote online or via SMS.

The Outstanding awards are voted for by industry peers. The awards have been the subject of vote rigging allegations on several occasions.

TOTL’s win is an intriguing one, since it doesn’t meet the Logies’ criteria for consideration. To be eligible for consideration, a programme “must be Australian-produced, set in Australia and have a predominantly Australian cast”.

TOTL fails on the latter two counts, and there’s an argument to be made both ways on the first. However, after a run that’s seen the show pipped by Behind the Candelabra more often than not, the close-to-home award win was appropriate.
