Tropfest adds Roughcut day

Tropfest closed submissions last Friday, with the judges now picking their way through to find the gemmiest of gems as finalists.

The festival has now added Roughcut, a day of lectures, conversations and presentations to run the day before the big event. Roughcut first ran at Tropfest in Australia last year, and gets its debut here in the inaugural edition.

The programme on Saturday 26 January will feature a keynote from Tropfest founder John Polson, 20 years on from Tropfest’s beginnings in Sydney. Local speakers on the line-up will be John Barnett, Katie Wolfe and Michael Bennett.

Barnett will present on ‘being the driving force’. Wolfe will present on the methodology of creating powerful imagery, drawing on her shorts This Is Her, Redemption and her adaptation of Witi Ihimaera’s Nights in the Gardens of Spain. Bennett will present on the essential elements of storytelling, the core of an idea and keeping an audience engaged.

The day runs a very troppo 10 – 3.30, leaving plenty of time to enjoy all New Plymouth has to offer before the festival screenings and awards get under way on Sunday. Tickets for Roughcut cost $28. The festival screenings and awards bash on Sunday are free. Full details about Tropfest NZ are here.
