Tropfest names 2017 winners

Tropfest NZ ran in Taranaki on Saturday evening, with the winners announced from the 16 titles in competition.

Mary Rinaldi & Sasha Nixon’s The Anniversary took the top award on Saturday night in New Plymouth at this year’s edition of Tropfest NZ. Rinaldi also took out the Best Actress gong. Third placed High Waisted was the other multiple award winner, also leaving with the Best Actor award for Jamaine Ross.

For the second year running Kennedy Faimanifo took out the Animated Film award. Last year Faimanifo won with Papa Taniwha; this year he produced Encroached. 2016 finalists Kirk and Luke Bremner went one better this year, winning the Best Use Of VFX award for The Classified.

Following the announcement of the event’s cancellation for 2017, Venture Taranaki and South Pacific Pictures stepped in to support the 2017 edition to go ahead. 2017 judges were SPP’s James Griffin (The Brokenwood Mysteries, Westside, Outrageous Fortune), actors Geraldine Brophy (Home Movie, King Kong, In My Father’s Den) and Karlos Drinkwater (Shortland Street, Spartacus: Blood and Sand), and producer Angela Littlejohn (Show of Hands, Apron Strings, Separation City).
