Tropfest warms up for 2014 edition

The NZ leg of the world’s largest short film festival, Tropfest, returns to New Plymouth in February. 16 New Zealand finalists will have their films screened in front of an industry jury and public audience with some great prizes on offer.

Tropfest runs to a tight timetable, with entries closing only a few weeks before the awards event. Last year’s inaugural event drew an audience of over 8,000 people.

Tropfest offers a range of $2,500 prizes – for Best Animated Film, Best Use of VFX, Best Maori Director, Best Actress and Best Actor. Winner of the headline Best Film award gets somewhat more delayed gratification, collecting a five-day trip to Los Angeles.

2013 winner Dave Smith (Cappuccino Tango) has just completed his trip, for AFM. He returned happy about everything except, appropriately, the coffee.

Entry deadline for the 2014 edition is Monday 6 January 2014. Tropfest presents its awards event at the TSB Bowl of Brooklands, New Plymouth, on Sunday 16 February 2014.
