TVNZ turns away from Heartland

TVNZ has announced via its Facebook page that its Heartland channel on Sky will cease broadcasting at the end of next month.

The statement reads:

We’re sad to announce that we will finish up broadcasting on May 31. The agreement between TVNZ and Sky is not being renewed so there will be no more Heartland on Sky Channel 17.
While disappointing, please rest assured we remain passionate about Kiwi content on TVNZ and will continue to bring you original local content through TV ONE, TV2 and TVNZ OnDemand.
We’ll celebrate our time on air in May, where we’ll be giving you the chance vote for your top ten Heartland programmes which will play out across the final weekend. Stay tuned for more details.
Heartland has had a great run over the last 5 years, and we’d like to thank you for supporting the channel.

Several of the comments about the news, both on Facebook and elsewhere, bemoan the diminishing opportunities to access local content, and remind viewers how many channels TVNZ has pulled the plug on in recent years.
