Two named for Producers Lab

The Toronto International Film Festival’s (TIFF) Producers Lab has named its participants for 2016.

As in previous years, 10 spots go to European producers, 10 to Canadian, and two each to Australia and NZ (the latter places supported by by Screen Australia and the NZFC respectively).

The two NZ producers selected are Fraser Brown and Nadia Maxwell.

Brown produced Paolo Rotondo’s Escalator feature Orphans & Kingdoms, which recently had its theatrical run, and is presently producing Roger Donaldson’s doco McLaren.

Maxwell produced Paul Glubb and Nic Gorman’s award-winning short Here Be Monsters (pictured, top) and is now in post on Gorman’s “structurally ambitious psychological thriller” Human Traces.

The Lab accepts producers at different stages of their careers, with Australia’s selections of Alex White and Tania Chambers a case in point. White has yet to make a feature. Chambers is the former CEO of funding agencies Screen NSW and ScreenWest, a Board Member of Screen Producers Australia, and produced Kriv Stenders’ Kill Me Three Times, which played Toronto in 2014. Most recently she’s produced Mark Lamprell’s A Few Less Men, which premieres later this year.

Among the Europeans is another Toronto alumnus, Amir Hamz from Germany. Hamz produced Achim Bornhak’s Der Nachtmahr, selected for TIFF last year. which played at Toronto last year. Alan Gilsenan’s Unless, produced by 2011 Lab alumnus Tristan Orpen Lynch, plays TIFF this year.

The TIFF Producers Lab runs 6 – 9 September. TIFF runs 8 – 18 September.
