NA Hong-jin’s The Wailing (pictured, top), which had its international premiere in Cannes, is the front-runner for this year’s Blue Dragon Awards in Korea. It has 11 nominations, including Best Film and Director.
Hot on its heels is YEON Sang-ho’s Train To Busan with 10. Also among several titles with six or more nominations is 2013 Big Screen Symposium presenter PARK Chan-wook’s The Handmaiden with eight nods.
Commercial fare has done well for Korea this year, with all three of the titles noted above performing well at home and abroad.
The Handmaiden’s KIM Min-hee is among the nominees for Best Actress. The Wailing’s KWAK Do-won gets a nod for Best Actor, where he’ll compete with The Age of Shadows’ SONG Kang-ho. SONG won the award two years ago for his performance in The Attorney.
Last year’s Best Film winner was Assassination, from The Thieves director CHOI Dong-hoon. This year, the Blue Dragon Awards will run 25 November.
