Wairoa 2012 awards winners

The seventh edition of the Wairoa Maori Film Festival closed on Monday, having handed out the awards on Saturday evening.

Most of the NZ films picking up prizes have already had some international festival success, while the most recently-completed will also screen at the NZIFF in the Wairoa-curated Nga Whanaunga Maori Pasifika Shorts programme.

Saturday’s Mana Wairoa Film Awards handed out seven gongs, three from the jury, three by popular acclaim and, for the second time, the WIFT-supported Mana Wahine award.

And the winners were …

Operation 8, Abi King Jones and Errol Wright

Best International Indigenous Entry
Voices in the Clouds, Tony Coolidge

Mana Wairoa Festival Prize Best Overall Entry
The Orator/O Le Tulafale, Tusi Tamasese

Audience Award – Aotearoa Short Film Best Actor
Jesse James Rehu Pickery for Meathead

Audience Award – Aotearoa Short Film Best Actress
Mabelle Dennison for Whakatiki

Audience Award – Aotearoa Best Short Film
Lawnmower Men of Kapu, Libby Hakaraia

Mana Wahine award
Ella Henry, for services to the film industry
