Dana Rotberg’s White Lies has taken the Best Overall Film gong at this year’s edition of the Balinale.
The Balinale hands out vox pop gongs at the end of its run, awarding four titles at the festival’s closing celebrations.
Last year White Lies took away the Best Makeup Design and Best Production Design gongs at the NZ Film Awards. At last year’s WIFTS Foundation International Visionary Awards in the US, Antonia Prebble received the Barbara Tipple Best Actress Award and Rotberg the WIFTS Best Director Award, both for their work on White Lies.
At the Balinale, the other titles awarded were
- BEST SHORT: Katrina Mathers & Graeme Base animated Australian short The Gallant Captain, adapted from Base’s picture book The Legend of the Golden Snail
- BEST DOCUMENTARY: Richard E. Robbins, Girl Rising (USA)
- BEST FEATURE: July Jung’s Cannes-premiered A Girl At My Door (Korea)
Special mentions went to David Dawkins’ doco The Wedding Contract: A Balinese Love Story (USA) and Mohammad Mehdi Asgarpour’s drama We Have A Guest (Iran).
The festival presented 60 titles from 18 countries, a considerable jump from last year’s 39 titles. Also screening from NZ was Paora Joseph’s doco, Te Awa Tupua: Voices From The River, making its international premiere after its world premiere in this year’s NZIFF.
This year’s Balinale ran 12 – 18 October.
