NZ’s gross Box Office take for 2016 was $206,605,000 according to figures released today by the NZ Motion Picture Distributors’ Association. The figure is up 6.8% on 2015’s $193 million, itself a record take.
Hunt For The Wilderpeople’s $12,181,582, the biggest take ever for a local title, took pole position, with Finding Dory’s $7 million+ and the almost $5.5 million 2016 take for 215 release Star Wars: The Force Awakens took the other podium spots.
Also in the top ten was The Jungle Book, for which Weta Digital received an Oscar nomination this morning.
“While 2016 was dominated by the phenomenal success of Hunt For The Wilderpeople, we were delighted to see consumers enjoyed a wide spread of quality content across many genres”, said MPDA Chairman Peter Garner. “We are also very pleased to see solid growth in the National Gross Box Office take by $13million above the 2015 result , which was in itself a record breaking year”.
