Wilderpeople up for UK gong

The British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) have rolled out the nominations list for this year’s event, with Taika Waititi’s Hunt for the Wilderpeople among the nominees for the International gong.

Ken Loach’s Palme d’Or winner I, Daniel Blake leads the pack with seven nominations, for Best British Independent Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay. Dave Johns is nominated for Best Actor and Hayley Squires up for Best Actress. Both actors also compete for the Most Promising Newcomer award. Loach has previous BIFA gongs including a Lifetime Achievement Award.

American Honey, Notes on Blindness and Under The Shadow have six nods apiece.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople competes in a tough field, against Manchester by the Sea, Moonlight, Mustang and Toni Erdmann.

Nominated in the Raindance-sponsored Discovery category is Jim Hosking’s The Greasy Strangler, for which producer Ant Timpson is among the nominees. Greasy is up against Black Mountain Poets, The Darkest Universe, The Ghoul and Gozo.

Winners will be announced at the British Independent Film Award Ceremony on Sunday 4 December (UK time).
