Wilderpeople wins in Ireland

Taika Waititi’s Hunt for the Widlerpeople took the Best International Feature gong on the weekend at the close of the Galway Film Fleadh. Wilderpeople won an eclectic selection. Judges had a harder time with the local feature award, naming joint winnners Peter Foott’s The Young Offenders and Darren Thornton’s A Date For Mad Mary.

The festival directs most of its competition sections to local talent, rewarding filmmakers across feature, short, doco and animation categories – and also Oscar qualifies short and animated films. Graham Cantwell took the short award for the second time. This year Lily took the gong. Cantwell’s A Dublin Story won back in 2003.

The Galway Film Fleadh ran 5 – 10 July.
