Zombies lurch off with 48Hours win

Wellington’s Noise and Pictures took the top honour with Brains. The bridesmaid placings were a repeat of last year’s; Lense Flare took silver for Girl with the Clover Tattoo and Mukpuddy bronze with Love in Decay.

Brains also took Best Script and Best Makeup, and Noise and Pictures ended the evening $60,000 richer in cash and kind and with the gold apee, presented at the second attempt following the accidental issuing of the gold statuette to bronze winners Mukpuddy.

Noise and Pictures took $16,000 in folding, ($10,000 from the NZFC, $6,000 from Wingnut Films). $35,000 in kind ($5,000 of rental from Niche Cameras, $10,000 in services from Park Road Post and $15,000 of post time at Envy Studios) and a year’s supply of V, courtesy of the naming rights sponsor.

Early in the evening Grand Cheval picked up another award for their 2011 national championship winner Child Jumpers, named the best winner of the V48Hours from votes cast by U viewers. Or, as host Hugh Sundae put it, “Yeah. Audience awards …”

The evening was its customary anarchic self, almost held together by Sundae who suffixed several inappropriate digs at various teams and celebrities “that’s unverified information”.

The grand finalists were screened, as was the “almost-live” reel of winners of craft awards (Hamilton teams reached the dizzy heights of taking out the award for Best Worst film and a couple of others) and then the winners of the last few awards got to take the stage.

In its tenth edition the awards became slightly less Auckland-centric, a point organiser Ant Timpson made in closing address, with a third of the winners being teams based beyond the Bombays. Then he offered to put $500 on the bar, which was probably the most effective way to empty the Civic auditorium quickly.

The V48 Hours winners were:
